How it's calculated

Enter the bed length and width in feet.
- 2
Set the spacing
Type the spacing in inches, pick a crop preset, or switch to square-foot-gardening mode (plants per square foot).
- 3
Choose a layout
Square grid is simplest. Triangular (offset) staggers every other row and fits ~15% more plants in the same space.
Frequently asked questions
How far apart should I plant tomatoes?
About 24 inches apart in a row — or one per square foot in square-foot gardening. Set the crop preset to Tomato and the calculator fills this in.
Square vs triangular spacing — which fits more?
Triangular (offset) packing fits roughly 15% more plants in the same bed because each staggered row nests into the gaps of the one before it.
Does this work for raised beds?
Yes — enter the inside dimensions of the bed. The calculator assumes half-spacing margins from the edges.
